This week, two Texas stages hit the dance floor, with the PGA Tour arriving at Memorial Park Golf Course at the 2025 Houston Open. The Houston Open, the opener of Lone Star State’s two-event swing, welcomes some of the best players in the world. He also hopes to secure a last-minute invitation to the Masters in two weeks.
Anyone who finishes within the top 50 of the World Golf Rankings by the end of the week will secure a very popular invitation to their first major championship (if they are not qualified yet). The few players who have not emphasized Augusta National’s field status and want to put together a final touch on preparation are the top two players in the world.
World No. 1 Scotty Scheffler has returned to Houston for six consecutive seasons as he is still searching for his first tournament title. It wasn’t because of lack of effort from Native Texans. Schaeffler scored T2, T9 and T2 finishes on his final three trips to Memorial Park, entering the weekend on the leaderboard after 36 holes.
It was Rory McIlroy who would cover up Schaeffler at the start of the 2025 season. World No. 2 has already won not one but two trophies in this campaign, appearing in his final start in the latest Player Championship. McIlroy, who won the first two times in his career before April, heads to Schaeffler’s top spot in the world and is heading down the road to complete his career grand slam at Augusta National.
This week marks the final start before the Masters for both Schaeffler and McIlroy, but they are not the only ones who want to make it to the first major. Wyndham Clark, Jason Day, Min Woo Lee, Sahis Tegara, Ricky Fowler, Tony Finau and Seungjae Im rounded out a strong field at the first Texas event of the year.
