The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has announced a recall of about 99,000 Volkswagen ID.4 electric crossover SUVs because the door handles could suddenly open while driving.
On September 4, NHTSA announced a recall of Volkswagen ID.4 vehicles manufactured between 2021 and 2024.
The NHTSA announced that Volkswagen is recalling 98,806 Volkswagen ID.4 electric SUVs for a door handle repair.
The department said the vehicles may have been manufactured with door handles that did not meet “factory specifications.”

Reuters reported that water could seep through the door and into the printed circuit board, causing a malfunction and allowing the defective door lock to open.

“Water may enter the circuit board assembly through the door handle, causing the door to open unexpectedly,” the recall notice said.

NHTSA said Volkswagen dealers will inspect and replace the door handles and provide free updates to vehicle software.

The Volkswagen number for this recall is 57J9. This recall expands on previous recall numbers 23V-312 and 23V-213y.
