Pho may be one of Vietnam’s most iconic dishes, but for Nguyen Thuc Thuy Tien, from Ho Chi Minh City, it’s Com Tam’s humble plate that will win her heart.
The dish is translated into “broken rice” and refers to the remaining grains of rice from the grinding process during harvest. Broken rice grains are considered inferior and make them difficult to sell, so farmers feed their families rather than throwing them away.
Over time, this “poor man’s rice” evolved into a iconic Vietnamese dish, especially in Ho Chi Minh City.
This dish brings back the favourite childhood memories of Thuy Tien, who crowned Miss Grand International in 2021.
“When I was a kid, I always ate a kom-tam on my way to high school,” the actress and the beautiful queen shared.
Com Tam was her first meal when she returned to Vietnam after a long trip, she added.
Thuy Tien recommends visiting these places in Ho Chi Minh City.
