Actor Uzoaduba, who will be appearing in the new Netflix Murder-Mystery series “The Residence,” opens up about the role, working with Shondaraimes to explain how her young daughter is important to help her find her inner peace in her busy life.
Aduba plays Cordelia Cup, the world’s best detective, in “The Residence.” She is called to investigate everyone in the White House after a mysterious death at state dinner and is reluctantly paired with an FBI agent.
“I loved her quirky little behavior,” Adva said. “She comes to the case in a way she’s never seen a detective come to the case before. She’s also a birder. She brings it with her to her detective job. She’s good at the job and loves it.”
The three-time Emmy winner calls her character “fearless” and “fatal.”
“She (Cupp) keeps her face straighter. She doesn’t want anyone interested in her to start moving in a direction she doesn’t want,” Adva explains.
Shonda Rhimes is the executive producer of the series. Adva said he personally didn’t know Rhimes, the creator behind hit shows like Scandal and Grey’s Anatomy, and called it an honor to work with her on the series.
“I was a fan of the huge, huge Shonda Rhymes, but I didn’t miss Thursday in ‘Scandal’. I saw it twice…and, just as Cordelia Cup is the best detective in the world, Shonda Rhymes is one of our best in the world of television,” Adva said.
Adva previously starred as Suzanne’s “Crazy Eyes” Warren in the hit Netflix series “Orange Is The New Black.”
“If we can bring out the connection between the part I’m playing now and the part of ‘Crazy Eye’, then both people aren’t themselves,” Adva said. “To me, ‘crazy eyes’ are so pure and honest that she was herself for better or worse, and she didn’t know any other way than a true version of herself. ”
Beyond her work world, Adva spoke with “CBS Morning” about the impact her one-year-old daughter had on her life.
“For me, I think there’s a lot of stuff outside of me. Whether it’s my job, I’m trying to connect and fulfill my connections, not just to be filled with things, but to be unfulfilled, I love my job. I love everything.
