A group of five small businesses on Monday sued President Donald Trump, seeking to block new tariffs he imposed on foreign imports outside the last few weeks.
The U.S. International Trade Court lawsuit alleges that Trump illegally robbed Congress of its authority to collect tariffs by claiming that trade deficits with other countries constitute an emergency.
“The emergency he allegedly claims is a diagram of his own imagination. The trade deficit that has been going on for decades without causing economic harm is not an emergency,” the lawsuit says. “These trade deficits “do not constitute an extraordinary and extraordinary threat either.”
“This court must illegally grab the President’s unprecedented power and prohibit the operation of administrative measures aimed at imposing these tariffs under the IEEPA (International Emergency Economic Force Act), and reaffirm the country’s core establishment principles.
