united airlines plans to expand internationally from Senegal to Mongolia and Greenland to Palau in 2025, hoping to attract travelers who have already enjoyed the busy streets of Paris, Rome and Tokyo.
Starting May 21, United Airlines will fly three times a week between its hub in Newark, New Jersey, and Palermo, Sicily. Starting May 16th, the airline will launch direct flights to Faro in Portugal’s Algarve region four days a week. Starting on June 7, the airline plans to fly to Madeira Island in Portugal three days a week. And on May 31, the airline will begin direct flights to Bilbao in northern Spain, a destination that will strengthen existing flights to Italy, Spain and Portugal.
United Airlines announced Thursday that its first flight between Newark and Nuuk, Greenland will begin on June 14.
“Savvy travelers have been to Paris, Rome and Madrid many times, so they’re looking for something different,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances. he told reporters.
Route experimentation has made United a standout among U.S. and global airlines that have largely stuck to basic additions. United plans to begin daily nonstop service from Washington Dulles International Airport to Dakar, Senegal on May 23. Not all destinations will work. United Airlines canceled nonstop flights to Bergen, Norway in 2023, citing lack of demand, but Quayle said the airline has room to continue expanding to far-flung destinations, and that its diverse network is not expensive. “The more unique our content is, the more we differentiate ourselves from our competitors and the more people will spend money with United,” Quayle said.
United Airlines was originally scheduled to begin service to Portugal’s Faro route this year, but was forced to postpone the flight due to a safety review by the Federal Aviation Administration, which identified “significant safety issues.” The review was completed at the beginning of this month.
United Airlines also plans to expand flights from the West Coast, but did not provide details Thursday.
