If you’re traveling to the UK this week, you may need to apply for a travel authorization online before you leave.
Starting Wednesday, Britain will require U.S. citizens, Canadians and citizens of more than 30 other countries to obtain a so-called electronic travel authorization (ETA).
Here’s what travelers need to know:
What is an electronic travel authorization?
An ETA is a pre-authorization for travelers from countries where the UK does not require a visa.
The UK launched the program in 2024 for visiting nationals from Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. It will take effect for more countries on Wednesday.
Travelers must pass through immigration upon arrival. The United States has similar digital authentication requirements for citizens of European Union member states, the United Kingdom, and other countries that do not require visas to enter the country. In late 2025, EU member states will require similar standards for U.S. citizens and nationals of other countries.
If you have a visa and are permitted to live, work or study in the UK, you do not need an ETA.
How can I get it?
You can apply online using the UK ETA app. android and iPhone. The application fee is 10 pounds (approximately $12.50) and is valid for two years, with a maximum visit period of six months. Payment is made by credit card.
Travelers must upload their passport and a photo of themselves to apply.
How long will it take?
Applicants can wait approximately three days for a decision to be notified via email.
What about the kids?
Everyone eligible for ETA must have one, including infants and children.
What if I’m connecting in the UK?
You will still need an ETA if you are traveling to a UK airport for a connecting flight to another country.
