Alcoa Corporation CEO Bill Oplinger has expressed concern that President Trump’s 25% steel and aluminum tariffs will be in effect and that it will focus on demanding exemptions.
President Donald Trump threatened to impose further tariffs on Canadian steel, aluminum, electricity and vehicles on Tuesday.
In response to Ontario’s 25% tariffs on electricity entering the US, Trump said he has directed Commerce Secretary Howard Luttonick to add an additional 25% tariffs on all steel and aluminum coming to the US from Canada. The new 50% tariff will come into effect Wednesday morning.
Trump announced the true society, deeming Canada “one of the best customs countries in any country in the world.”
The move comes after Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford imposed a 25% tariff on electricity exports from Canada to the US in Michigan, New York and Minnesota on Monday. Speaking to reporters in front of the podium that read “Canada is not on sale,” he said the extra charge would cost families and businesses up to $400,000 each day. On average, the Ontario premier said he would add about $100 a month to “difficult American bills.”
“Let me be clear: I won’t hesitate to increase this charge,” Ford said. “If necessary, if the US escalates, I won’t hesitate to shut off the electricity completely. When you say you don’t want to do this, trust me. I feel it’s scary to the American people because it wasn’t the Americans who started this trade war.

In a follow-up post Tuesday, Trump said, “Why do we allow other countries to supply electricity, even in small regions?”
“Who made these decisions and why?” Trump said. “And can you imagine Canada as a low enough electricity to use, affecting the lives of innocent people, and as a negotiation tip and threat?
Trump also said Canada must “quickly drop 250% to 390% anti-American farmers’ tariffs on a variety of US dairy products that have long been considered outrageous.” The president said he would soon declare a “national emergency regarding electricity in the threatened region.” This will allow the US to “quickly do what it has to do to mitigate this abusive threat from Canada.”
“If other terrible, long-term tariffs are not removed by Canada as well, there will be a significant increase in tariffs on cars coming to the US on April 2nd, Trump added.
Trump expressed interest in the United States, which has gained control of Canada through economic pressure, but has used military force to potentially rule it out. In contrast, he has not ruled out military forces on sight in terms of acquisition of Greenland and the Panama Canal.

Trump says he has suspended some tariffs “help” Mexico and Canada to “a certain degree”
“We subsidize Canada to more than $200 billion a year. Why can’t this continue?” Trump wrote. “The only thing that makes sense is that Canada will become our precious 50 first province. This will make all the tariffs and all the other tariffs. Canadians’ taxes will be cut very dramatically. Finally disappeared a few years ago, we have the safest and most beautiful country anywhere in the world, and your wonderful national anthem “O Canada” will continue to play, but now we represent the greatest powerful nations of the greatest country the world has ever seen! ”
At a press conference on Monday, Ontario’s prime minister thanked Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, denounced the “uncertainty” Trump has brought about.

“Ontario will not be merciless until these tariffs are off the table, until the tariff threat is permanently gone,” Ford told reporters. “We need to end the chaos completely.”
