Van Nostrand passed a New York state trooper who conducted a traffic stop, which led to a shootout.
“I wasn’t 100% sure what I saw at first, but I could see the trooper skip a little bit to the side,” Van Nostrand said.
“Then I saw the gunman actually pull a gun into his car and start firing at the state troopers through his back window. There was a really intense shootout, bullets flying. Ta.”

Last year, Van Nostrand and Elijah Ramos of Victorville, California, were named Highway Heroes for their courageous actions on the road.
Father was surprised to find three children in his last family carpool before retirement.
Ramos, a Rider Systems driver, was on his morning route in a remote desert area when his SUV lost control, crossed multiple lanes of traffic and crashed into a field.
