The US State Department recently issued a Level 2 travel advisory, warning travelers to exercise increased attention in the Turkish and Caicos Islands due to crime.
An alert comes as the islands prepare for spring break visitors.
Most crimes in the UK’s overseas territory, located in the Atlantic, southeast of Miami and just south of Bermuda, occur on the main islands of Turks and Caicos, with local police likely limiting their investigative resources.

Authorities noted that police were strictly enforcing the Arms Act, even when travelers were leaving. Travelers face arrests, prison time and heavy fines.
“Some US citizens are in custody and are unable to leave for more than a few weeks after finding a bullet in their package,” the warning said.
Criminals have faced prisons for over 12 years.
“The law allows some exceptions and discretion, but the State Department cannot guarantee your release,” according to the department.
