NEW YORK — Timothée Chalamet made a surprise appearance at his lookalike contest in Manhattan on Sunday.
A large crowd formed in Washington Square Park and at least one person was arrested after police broke up the event.
Chalamet posed for photos with his doppelgängers, some of whom came dressed as characters from the movies “Wonka” and “Dune.”
The lookalike contest was one of several hosted by YouTube personality Anthony Poe, and the winner was promised $50. As word spread on social media, thousands of people signed up to participate.
From a “dumb joke” to a “challenge”
Minutes into the competition, and before Chalamet arrived, police ordered the group to disperse from the park. Organizers were fined $500 for the “unpermitted costume contest,” and police said one person was issued a citation for disorderly conduct.
“It started out as a silly joke and now it’s become a huge mess,” Paige Nguyen, a YouTube creator and producer, told The Associated Press.
The group moved to another park, and spectators ultimately recognized Staten Island College senior Myles Mitchell as the winner.
“I’m excited and overwhelmed,” Mitchell said. “There were a lot of people who looked like me. It was really difficult.”
Contestants were asked to demonstrate their French language skills, their romantic plans with Kylie Jenner, and what they would do to make the world a better place.
