Many travelers visiting Rome, Italy find themselves at the Colosseum, one of the world’s most iconic architectural wonders.
And now tourists visiting the famous Colosseum may have a simple time as Italian authorities have ended their crackdown on ticketing policies, making it even more difficult for visitors to access the landmarks.
The Italian Competition Authority discovered that agencies are using tourists, using practices that made it difficult for regular visitors to purchase basic online tickets, according to the Associated Press (AP).

According to the Associated Press, the Colosseum is Italy’s most visited landmark and attracted over 12 million tourists in 2023 alone.
“The investigation began in July 2023. After authorities gathered information indicating that online purchase of tickets to access the Colosseum archaeological park is essentially impossible,” the organization said in a press release.

The fines for businesses are $22 million, with the Cooperative Cultural Association agency receiving most of the fines for nearly $8 million, according to the Associated Press.

The group was obtained for selling tickets bundled with tour guide offers and line skipping abilities. This forced tourists to buy tickets at a significantly higher price.

Officials said the group “didn’t take appropriate measures to counter the stockpiling of automated tickets…it (and) maintained a significant share of tickets for bundled sales tied to its own educational tour that produced substantial profits.”

The Cooperative Culture Society managed ticket purchases to the Colosseum from 1997 to 2024.
According to the State Department, around 6 million Americans traveled to Italy in 2023.
