Endangered whale species (such as blue, humpback, and fin whales) face significant threats on the high seas. Cruise ships and container ships have difficulty avoiding collisions with whales. Sports: How ‘Tommy John Surgery’ changed the national pastime
In 1974, Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Tommy John was having a dream season when, while pitching, he tore his UCL, the ligament that supports a pitcher’s arm. After a creative surgical procedure, John recovered and went on to play for 14 more seasons, changing the game forever. Currently, an astounding 35% of active MLB pitchers have undergone Tommy John surgery. But it’s not just major leaguers. Approximately 60% of athletes who undergo surgery are under the age of 19. Correspondent Faith Sally looks at how surgery has changed the way people view repetitive sports injuries.

Architecture: Preserving Modernism in Palm Springs
Designed in 1931 by architects Albert Frey and Lawrence Kocher and quickly assembled from mostly metal parts, the Alminaire House caused a sensation when it debuted at the New York Architectural and Related Arts Exposition. However, the house later fell into disrepair, and without the preservation efforts of architectural experts, it would have disappeared even if it had been transported and rebuilt. It is now part of the Palm Springs Art Museum’s permanent collection. Correspondent Luke Burbank looks at the legacy of Albert Frey, whose architecture contributed to the rise of modernism in Palm Springs.
