Some Egg Beaters and Bob Evans liquid egg products are currently undergoing recalls as they may contain bleach-equipped cleaning solutions, the US Department of Agriculture said.
Liquid egg replacements were recalled by Cargill Kitchen Solutions in Lake Odessa, Michigan. This is because it can contain a cleaning solution containing sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach. The recall covers 212,268 pounds of product produced on March 12th and March 13th.
The USDA said food safety and testing services received hints about potential contamination, but the agency said using the product should not cause negative health effects. In a statement emailed to CBS MoneyWatch, Cargill said there were no reported illnesses or injuries related to the product.
According to Cargill, the products affected by the recall have been distributed to foodservice customers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Ohio and Texas. “We have set up a consumer hotline to answer questions about recalls at 1-844-419-1574, as food and consumer safety are our number one priority,” the company said.
However, according to the USDA, the product could be distributed nationwide.
The agency’s food safety force said consumers who purchased the recalled products were urged not to eat them, and restaurants were likewise urged not to serve them. “These products should be thrown away or returned to where they are purchased,” the agency said.
