The exact cause of death is unknown at this time, but a second child with measles died in Texas, according to the Department of Health and Human Services.
HHS secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. is scheduled to attend the child’s funeral on Sunday, a spokesman told NBC News.
It is the first reported death in a decade that New Mexico children and adults are believed to have died from measles.

The Texas Department of Health Services has reported that 481 confirmed cases of measles in Texas alone since January.
According to NBC News, this total includes six infants and toddlers at Lubbock’s daycare center. Two of these children are among 56 people hospitalized with measles in the area since the disease began spreading in January.

Of the 1,000 children infected with measles, about 1-3 have died from respiratory and neurological complications, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. One in 20 children with measles suffer from pneumonia. This is the most common cause of death from measles in young children.
The outbreak of measles began in Texas in late January, but has since spread to several other states.

According to NBC News, 628 cases of measles have been reported in the United States in at least 21 states and in Washington, DC.
