At least 51 people are dead after a bus jumped off a bridge on Monday in the outskirts of Guatemala’s capital, Hector Flores said.
Firefighter spokesman Edwin Vilgran said the crash of a multivehicle sent the bus off the bus before dawn. Others were seriously injured.
Volunteer firefighter spokesman Óscar Sánchez said the children were among the victims.
According to Guatemala City spokesman Carlos Hernandez’s municipal fire department, the bus fell 115 feet into a creek where sewage was contaminated after colliding with two vehicles. It crashed through a metal safety railing, turned upside down, locking in the half-sucking survivor, he said.
The bus came from Progso, northeast of the capital. This is a busy bus route that crosses a stream and crosses a highway bridge.
