First-time candidates Chubby Checker, Joe Cocker and Bad Company will be introduced to Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, a class that also includes pop star Cyndi Roper, Hip Hop Pioneer Outcast, Rock Duo the White Stripe and Grunge Masters Soundgarden.
Salt-N-PEPA, the first female rap act to achieve gold and platinum status, and late singer-songwriter Warren Zebon, will be awarded the Musical Influence Award. The late record producer Tom Bell, pianist Nikki Hopkins and bassist Carol Kay all won Musical Excellence Awards.
Singing in Woodstock and best known for his cover of The Beatles’ “With the Little Help of My Friends,” the late Cocker had the support of Billy Joel, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top and Pete Thomas, a member of Elvis Costello.
Soundgarden – the late Chris Cornell as singer – enters the hall on the third selection. They follow two other grunge acts in the hall, Nirvana and Pearl Jam. Bad companies have become radio fixtures with arena rock staples, such as “It feels like Makin’ Love”, “Can can low get get” and “rock’n’ roll fantasy.”
The Ahmet Eltegun Award, given to a professional in the bad industry who had a major impact on music, will be sent to former Warner Bros Records head Lenny Wallonker, who signed Prince and Rem and signed records of Madonna, Randy Newman, Doubie Brothers, Ricky Lee Jones, Paul Simon and Gary Clark Jull.
Nominees who did not reach this year include Mariah Carey, Fish, Billy Idol, Joy Division/New Order, Mana, Black Crows and Oasis.
The checkered recording of “The Twist” and subsequently “The Let’s Twist Again” is considered among the most popular songs in rock and roll history. The 83-year-old expressed his dissatisfaction that he had not been allowed to enter before, including telling the Associated Press in 2014. “I don’t want to go there when I was 85.
In the 1980s, Lauper rose to fame with hits such as “Time After After” and “Girls Just Want Want Wake Fun,” and won a Tony Award for “Kinky Boots.” Composed of the André3000 and Big Boi, Outkast has six Grammy Awards and a reputation for pushing the boundaries of hip hop. The artist must have released their first commercial recordings at least 25 years ago, when they were eligible for induction. The introduction ceremony will be held in Los Angeles this fall.
The candidates were voted by over 1,200 artists, historians and music industry experts. Selection criteria include “the influence of artists on other musicians, the scope and lifespan of their careers and work, and excellence in their innovation, style and technique.”
