Oscar Award Winner Costume designer Paul Tazewell says that the creative process of “Evil” began with an abstract concept and transformed the land of Oz through detailed costume design.
“That was where the idea of the Spiral worked for the idea of ’evil things’ and mushroom texture,” Tazewell said. “I’m working to adjust these elements.”
The designer who made history as the first black man to win an Oscar for costume design explained how his approach focused on character development.
“It’s all about telling stories through what my medium is, that it’s clothing and making those characters visually interesting or more specific,” Tazewell said.
Rethinking the iconic witch hat shows his innovative approach.
“It was a lot of stuff, and one thing was that there was a moment when Glinda put on a hat. Elphabathis is given as a joke, “Tazewell explained.” John Chu I wanted to start a film, but he explained it from the beginning. It will see it from afar, and it will look like a mountain, and you will come near and you will make it happen. ”
The costume designer’s journey began in the Midwest.
“We slept outside and behind our house in Akron, Ohio, dreaming of what our lives would be like as adults,” Tazewell reflected. “It was known that I was becoming famous and living an attractive life…but I didn’t know that I would give me the perfect, rich life I had. It’s a costume designer, and I can work with amazing talent and tell a story that really matters.”
With this Oscar victory, Tazewell expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to inspire others.
“It’s inspiration for all young people who want to find themselves in the costume world and express themselves creatively. I’m so grateful for finding my strength as a creative person, wanting to be a costume designer because they want to be a performer.”
