Comedian Taylor Tomlinson has her sights set on her dream guest, Conan O’Brien, on CBS’ late-night show “After Midnight.”
“I think he’s one of the funniest people on and off stage and screen,” Tomlinson said in an interview with “CBS Morning” Wednesday. “I would love to have him on the show.”
Tomlinson, who returned to the stage with his new comedy tour Save Me, will also return for the second season of After Midnight. She headlined the seventh-highest-grossing comedy tour last year, according to Billboard.
When asked about the creative freedom of her show, Tomlinson praised her work in late-night television. “You can try new things and get weird, and our show is very weird,” she said.
She explained that while there is a team of writers who prepare jokes for the guests, the format also allows for plenty of improvisational moments. “I think people are so prepared that they feel ready to riff and love doing something right away,” she said.
Tomlinson said collaborating with other comedians, especially improvisers, adds an exciting element to the show because it makes it unpredictable and spontaneous. Stand-up comedians, who typically perform alone, don’t have many opportunities to interact and collaborate in the same way, but when improvisers join a show, they are great at playing off each other, and she I especially enjoy the dynamic.
Her latest tour, “Save Me,” is deeply personal and reflects her experiences growing up in a religious family. “I grew up in the church, so I have a lot to say about both the positives and the challenges of growing up that way,” she said.
The tour also explores other important themes, such as sexuality and deciding whether to have children.
“I’ve had a lot to organize and deconstruct over the years, and I wanted people who come to my shows and live shows to know that it’s been a lot. ” she said.
