As European cities are working on overtourism, some people are implementing a variety of tourism taxes, while others discuss taxation.
A group of Spanish islands off the coast of Africa, communities in the Canary Islands are looking to implement taxes that fund infrastructure projects to handle many tourists.

Magan Mayor Onaria Bueno said “tourists staying in the municipality will contribute to paying for what corresponds to the services and activities they enjoy during their stay.”
“Magan is not turning away from tourism, it’s the exact opposite. We accept that and expect it with quality service,” Bueno added.

According to British TV and Radio Outlet GB News, the tax was repealed in the court a day after it was introduced.

Judge Francisco Jose Gomez de Lorenzo Caceres said the tax created “an inappropriate and unbalanced burden” and should have been regulated by formal law, Canarian Weekly reported.
A spokesman for the Magan City Council confirmed that the group would appeal the decision, the Independent reported.
Last year, 9.9 million tourists visited the Canary Islands between January and September, according to the Spanish National Institute of Statistics.
