Mid-Flight Skincare routine goes viral on social media

Several types of skin care products used to treat acne are recalled due to the risk of cancer.
Products containing benzoyl peroxide, a common treatment for acne, have been tested for elevated levels of benzene, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) said in a notice this week.

The manufacturer of Zapzyt acne treatment gel has agreed to voluntarily recall the product due to the high levels of benzene found in their own tests, the FDA said.
The FDA explained that 90% of the 95 products containing benzoyl peroxides tested have “undetectable or very low levels of benzene.”
Benzene is “a chemical used in the production of a wide range of industrial products, including chemicals, dyes, detergents, and some plastics.”
In 2024, there will be fewer recalls of foods that have made more Americans sick than the previous year, the new report says.
It is released into the air through “cigarette smoke, car emissions, and burning coal and stone.”

Although it is safe to use benzoyl peroxide in acne products, long-term benzene contamination “can reduce blood cell formation. Long-term exposure to benzene through inhalation, oral ingestion, and skin absorption, can cause cancers such as leukemia and other blood disorders.
The FDA said it began independent testing of benzoyl peroxide products after third-party test results “slept concerns about elevated benzene levels in certain acne products.”
“The results of FDA testing show that there are fewer benzene-contaminated products than third-party findings,” the agency added.

“This means retailers are being instructed to remove products from store shelves and online markets, but they do not instruct consumers to take action regarding the products they currently own,” the FDA said. “Even if you have used these products for decades, the risk for people who develop cancer due to exposure to benzene discovered with these products is very low.”
