Singapore Airlines plans to add a four-seater first class to its Airbus planes on its longest routes, in a bid to lure travelers willing to spend more on flights lasting more than 17 hours.
The company plans to add new seats to its seven Airbus A350-900 URLs, ultra-long-range aircraft used for long-haul travel, including the longest between New York and Singapore. The airline will also update the cabins of its long-haul Airbus planes and introduce new business class seats. The seats will also likely include suites with sliding doors, a popular design used by airlines to sell privacy as an in-flight perk.
Singapore said its new first and business class seats will feature new in-flight entertainment, but the airline did not reveal many details about the new cabin. “We push the boundaries of comfort, luxury and modernity,” CEO Goh Choon Fung said in a news release.
Airlines have invested billions of dollars in renovating luxury cabins to keep up with travelers willing to spend more for more space on board. They range from international airlines such as Singapore Airlines to smaller airlines such as: jet blue airlinesis a long-range twin-aisle jet aircraft used for transatlantic travel, with suites with sliding doors.
Singapore’s refurbishment plans also include new cabins for 34 long-range Airbus A350 aircraft as part of a S$1.1 billion (approximately US$835 million) refurbishment scheduled to enter service in mid-2026. Included. These seats include 42 business class seats, 24 premium economy seats, and 192 standard economy seats, which is more than the 187 economy seats currently listed in the aircraft’s configuration.
Ultra-long-haul planes currently only have business class and premium economy cabins. According to the airline’s website, after the introduction of a new cabin design with first class, the total number of seats in business class will increase from 67 to 70 seats, and 58 premium economy seats will be offered, up from 94 currently. It is said that
Most U.S. airlines have already eliminated or are in the process of eliminating first class cabins on long-haul flights in favor of larger business class cabins.

american airlines is refurbishing some of its Boeing 777s to include 70 business class seats instead of separate first and business class cabins, as well as business class seats on 777s and the Boeing 787 Dreamliner. We plan to upgrade the design to one with sliding doors. Supply chain issues have delayed some retrofits as demand for premium seats increases across the industry post-pandemic.
However, some airlines plan to keep first class on at least some routes. German airline Lufthansa’s new first class “Suite” will debut on November 9th.
