Senate Democrats faced backlash on Monday as protections for women and girls in sports law failed to win the votes needed to beat the filibuster.
Republicans needed 60 votes, but only 51 votes. No Democrats sided with Republicans on the bill. Like the two Republicans, two Democrats lacked the vote. The bill failed, 51-45.

Protection of women and girls in sports law requires Title IX to deal with gender “recognized based solely on reproductive biology and genetics at birth” and does not allow adjustments to apply to gender identity.
The bill was introduced by Senator Tommy Tuberville of R-Ala and has more than 40 co-sponsors in the Senate. It also codifies one of Trump’s many recent executive orders, making policy even better longevity.
R-La. Rep. Mike Johnson, and activists who fought for fairness in women’s and women’s sports, were among those who tore Senate Democrats over their lack of support for the bill. Two House Dems voted in favor of the bill in January.

“That’s shocking. I can’t believe Democrats don’t follow common sense about this and protecting women and girls,” Johnson told Fox News.

Last month, President Donald Trump issued an executive order to ban biological men from competing in women’s and girls’ sports. The order withholds federal funds from states, including transgender people, in women and girls’ sports.
