On any red carpet, Selena Gomez represents beauty, poise, and confidence. But she’ll be the first to tell you that things aren’t always what they seem. For example, her latest film “Emilia Perez”. Gomez co-stars in the role of the wife of a powerful Mexican drug lord who is secretly relocating. The film is part poignant true crime story, part touching love story, part journey of self-discovery, part musical. But somehow everything works out.

Gomez said all of her dance numbers “hurt a little bit” because of the shooting. So why did she want to do it? “I thought it was incredibly convincing,” she said. “I’ve never seen a movie like this before. I don’t think I’ve ever been so proud in the field of acting.”
And that’s really saying something. Gomez, 32, has a lot to be proud of. Although she is an accomplished actor, she is also a very successful singer-songwriter, and thanks to her extremely popular Rare Beauty line of cosmetics, she is also a billionaire and a very active philanthropist. That’s all very impressive, but it’s even more impressive when you understand where she started.
Gomez was born in the town of Grand Prairie, Texas. Her mother, Mandy Teefey, was only 16 years old. Selena’s parents divorced when she was five years old. She says there was a lot of love in her family, but there were also tough times when her mother struggled to put food on the table. “My mother worked multiple jobs,” she said. “When she had me, she was also graduating from high school. Seeing that I’m doing something great today makes me even more grateful for what she taught me.”
Gomez was only 10 years old when she appeared on TV’s “Barney & Friends.” Years later, he became a regular on the Disney Channel with shows like “Wizards of Waverly Place.”
She also branched out into the field of music and became a pop sensation. Then, when the pandemic hit, she switched gears again and hosted Selena + Chef, a popular online cooking show filmed from her home kitchen in LA. “We had cameras everywhere, on every side,” she said.
And what are her cooking skills like now? “They’re not that great, I’m not going to lie!” she laughed.

And in 2021, she helped create one of TV’s biggest hits, “Only Murders in the Building.” She praised her co-stars Steve Martin and Martin Short, saying, “These guys, Steve and Martin, have been working together longer than I’ve been alive, but this is the first time they’ve been on set. “I take the time to ask everyone about themselves.” They’re great people who let me know what their day is like and they think everything through, and they’ve helped me grow in so many ways. They are my friends, my allies, and the people I can talk to. I couldn’t be more grateful for the advice. they. “
Gomez is the first to admit that she has lived a magical life, and that it hasn’t always been a bed of roses. She has been open about her health struggles, including suffering from lupus and undergoing a kidney transplant.
She also decided to go public with her battle with anxiety and depression and her diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Her 2022 documentary Selena Gomez: My Mind & Me is an unvarnished look at her life: the highs and the deepest lows.
She admits that she was a little nervous about sharing this work with the world, but says, “Once I put it out there, I felt so relieved, because I think the strongest thing a person can do is… Because I firmly believe that one thing is to be vulnerable. And that doesn’t mean you have to pour out your heart to everyone. But I knew I wasn’t the only one who felt that way. And if my world was already out there for everyone to see, I would do it. I would like to add more to my story. In other words, what I’m doing is a dream. ”
Part of her dream was a charity event held last month for Rare Impact Fund, a charity that aims to support young people suffering from the same mental health issues she experienced. “This is probably the most important thing to me besides my family,” she said. “This is the greatest thing of all.”

Another highlight was his relationship with music producer Benny Blanco, who was named one of the sexiest men alive by People magazine. “Yes, that’s my man!” Gomez said. “I’m really, really lucky to know that there are people in the world who care deeply about every little thing about who I am.”
It’s clear from Emilia Perez that she is an artist who likes to take risks. But Selena Gomez’s bravest act was sharing her true self, and it made all the difference.
“Overall, the response has been overwhelmingly positive, hasn’t it?” I asked.
“Of course. Maybe,” Gomez replied.
perhaps? “I don’t really need anyone’s approval,” she added. “I really think I’m okay with where I am and who I am. And I’m glad. I’m glad that I finally got there.”
