Roy Cooper was called “Superlooper” in his legendary rodeo career and passed away this week at the age of 69.
Cooper, considered the biggest roper of all time, died Tuesday in a fire at his property home in Decatur, Texas.
“It’s a great sadness for our family to share the death of our father, superlooper Roy Cooper,” Cooper’s son, TUF, wrote in a Facebook post. “We are all shocked at the words from this tragedy at this moment.”

Cooper began his career in 1976, winning the World Championships in his first National Finals. He won eight titles overall and was appointed Prorodeo Hall of Fame in 1979, just three years after his career.
TUF is a third generation rodeo star. Cooper’s parents were also Roper. Cooper’s mother was born on a ranch, and the family lived in New Mexico when he grew up.

“It hurts to hear of Roy Cooper’s death… he has influenced generations of cowboys and his legacy,” Andorra Estes Beatty, a returnee of the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame, said via the Express Tribune.
“The rodeo community laments today the great losses of the death of Rodeo legend and superlooper Roy Cooper,” the Texas Department of Agriculture added. “Committee Sid Miller and his wife Debra are lifting up the Cooper family in prayer as they navigate this heartbreaking time.”
“When someone referenced “Superlooper,” every rodeo fan knew exactly who you were talking to,” wrote professional bullriding CEO Sean Gleeson.

Cooper became the first Roper to win $2 million in 2000 at the Pro Rodeo.
