The Colorado Rockies are calling one of the best pitching prospects in baseball. Right-handed Chase Drawland will be summoned to make his MLB debut this Sunday for the team’s (Sacramento) track and field at Coorsfield, announced Friday. Manager Bud Black said Drawland was in the rotation to stay. It’s not a spot start.
This is the team that gives Drawland the news of his big league promotion:
“He’ll be here tonight in Denver. He’ll be at the ballpark tomorrow,” Black said Friday. “…He’s doing a lot for the younger players. He’s going to be a really good pitcher in the long run. I’m looking forward to Sunday.”

RJ Anderson
The 23-year-old Drawland was the ninth overall pick in the 2023 draft for Tennessee. He dominated the minors last year, pitching 2.59 ERA with 169 strikeouts in 118 innings between High Class-A and Double-A. Drawland allowed one run in four innings last Sunday in his triple-A debut. His spring training didn’t go well (16 runs in 17 2/3 innings), but that didn’t stop the Rockies.
Our RJ Anderson ranked Drawland as the 16th best prospect in baseball to participate in spring trainingand the fourth best pitching outlook. Here’s his article:
Drawland entered the 2023 draft cycle, considered the best pitcher in his class thanks to Arsenal, led by a combination of stellar fastball sliders. He was eventually surpassed by Paul Skens (and some afterwards). But since turning pro, he’s done well to remind people why he was so advertised in the first place. Last season, Drawland split between Hier and Double A, attacking more than a third of the batters he faced (although his walking speed is inflated), placing himself in his big league debut in 2025.
Baseball America currently ranks Drawland as the No. 7 prospect in baseball. He is the first Rockies pitcher to appear on the top 100 baseball American leads list since John Gray in 2014-16, and is only the second to rank among the top 10 baseball American leads. Left-handed Franklin Morales was the eighth candidate for baseball in America in 2008.
On my off day, the Rockies skipped No. 5 starter and managed to make the spin first turn. The Colorado rotation currently has a 1.35 ERA, the lowest in baseball, but the 1.23 whip is the middle of the pack. They worked as baserunners early this year, building exceptional work. It works with short bursts, but rarely over the course of 162 games.
Despite that star rotation work, the Rockies are 1-5 in their younger seasons and are outscored 24-11. They will play A’s home opener at Coorsfield on Friday.
