The National Coffee Association found that 67% of Americans drink coffee daily, and WalletHub released research showing the best cities for coffee lovers.
WalletHub analyzed the 100 most populous cities in the U.S. based on 12 key metrics, using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Google Trends, Yelp and other platforms.
Metrics included include the average price per pack of coffee, the average price of a cappuccino, the average amount spent on coffee per household, the number of coffee shops per capita, the number of donut shops per capita, and more.

WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo told Fox News Digital that the changes in the rankings over the years indicate “the competitive nature of the coffee industry across the U.S. and the changing metrics that influence the rankings.”

“Coffee has become a staple in American culture, helping people fuel their work and bond with friends and dates,” Lupo said in a press release.

Portland, Oregon was ranked as the best city for coffee lovers due to its abundance of affordable coffee shops rated 4.5 or higher out of 5 stars.
For 2023, Portland is ranked second and San Francisco is ranked first.

According to a WalletHub report, Portland has the ninth-most coffee shops in the world that offer free Wi-Fi per capita, yet just over 24% of the population owns an electric coffee grinder to brew coffee at home.

“Portland, Oregon maintained its top spot as America’s best coffee city in 2024, reaffirming its strong coffee culture and vibrant local scene,” Lupo said.
“Portland’s selection as this year’s top coffee city isn’t surprising given its previous rankings, but its drop from No. 1 in 2021 to No. 5 in 2022, before returning to the top spot in 2024, suggests its coffee scene is dynamic,” he added.

San Francisco and Seattle came in second and third, respectively, with an average annual spend on coffee of $280 and $240, respectively.

“While cities like San Francisco and Seattle also have thriving coffee cultures, Portland’s longevity at the top of the rankings reflects its deep-rooted coffee culture and commitment to excellence,” Lupo said.
