Weapons used during the Siege of Yorktown will soon be unveiled in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
The Museum of the American Revolution welcomes a sword presented by Major General Marquis de Lafayette to a soldier in the Continental Army’s Light Infantry Corps.
Jeremiah Keeler of Ridgefield, Conn., carried the sword as a crutch during long walks during the Siege of Yorktown at the end of the Revolutionary War, according to a museum press release.

Keeler and his infantry, led by Alexander Hamilton, “stormed British forts and led the Continental Army and its French allies to victory,” the statement said.
This sword was purchased by Lafayette in the winter of 1779-1780 and is made of iron, steel, and brass with a leather scabbard.

“We are thrilled to be able to share the story of America’s first great generation of young Connecticut veterans with visitors from across the country and around the world,” said Dr. R. Scott Stevenson, president and CEO of the museum. I’m excited about it.”
The heirloom was donated by Keeler’s great-granddaughter in honor of her mother.
“It’s hard to put into words how much this meant to my mom. I think the most important thing for our family is to honor her with this donation,” Suzanne Reynolds said.

“I think it’s important for people to know that these artifacts are out there and can be shared with people in this country and even around the world,” she said.
Ridgefield’s Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center was an inn run by the Keeler family in 1772, then acquired by the town and turned into a museum.
“Jeremiah Keeler is a patriotic figure here in Ridgefield, and one of the only members of his famous family to be drafted into the military during the Revolutionary War,” said Kathryn Prescott, chief curator of the Keeler Tavern Museum and History Center. said.

The sword will be on public display at the American Revolutionary War Museum starting November 5th.
