This only happened once. I’d like to say it was during his tour in Tahoe. He always occupied the entire top floor of whatever hotel he stayed in for himself and his entourage. That night he went back to his bedroom and got really, really angry, cursing and screaming. Someone told me to sit behind a chair in the main suite and not move. Everyone was hiding behind something, trying to get out of the way. So I hid and watched as he grabbed an arm full of things and threw them over the balcony. He was going to find a flight path and fly until he finished throwing things from the balcony.
Eventually he calmed down and someone said to me: “It’s okay, you can come out now. He wants to see you.”
I thought maybe he wanted to meet me.
I said, “Why was he so angry?”
“Well, we’re out of water,” someone said.
So I went into his room with 4 bottles of water.
“Someone said there’s no water,” I said, and he just motioned for me to come hug him.
But he was polite, he wasn’t rude to people, he wasn’t an angry person, and he didn’t live there. Some live in total destruction, while others buy property and walk around angrily for a while. My father only came to visit.
My father used to take me to an amusement park called Libertyland in Memphis from time to time, but he closed it down for me and my entire entourage, as well as our family and friends. He and I often rode roller coasters. I loved it.
My father got angry when we were supposed to go to Libertyland. I had invited all my friends, but when I went upstairs the night before, I heard the wrong kind of tone, this baritone sound, the wrong kind of intensity. When I went to my room, I heard a loud crash. He was yelling at someone. I heard him say he wasn’t going to Libertyland the next day. I was devastated.
I found out later that he was missing something again and needed to get it before we went. Otherwise, they won’t give it to him. So he jumped onto the roof and called about 10 doctors and nurses until he found someone who would treat him. A nurse or doctor gave him everything he needed and he felt better. Then we went to Libertyland.
I remember sitting next to him on the Zippin Pippin roller coaster that day, one eye in front of me and the other on the gun in the holster beside me. I think it’s terrible if you don’t know or understand him. You might think he was crazy carrying pieces with his daughter sitting next to him, but he was just a Southerner. It was really interesting.
So we kept riding.
That was about a week before he passed away.
