Since chatgpt Released just two years ago, it has expanded significantly anywhere from work to academia. Schools across the country have been working on ways to combat this new tool. Some say it has advantages, while others point out negatives like fraud.
This leads to disparities in classrooms across the country, and some teachers encourage them. Using AI And others vote to ban it altogether.
“We have a better approach than banning AI literacy, actually teaching children in a developmentally appropriate way, what AI is and how to use it responsibly, with a better approach than banning AI completely. I really believe there is,” the group that offers what it calls “AI literacy training,” told CBS.
A former high school biology teacher, Bickerstaff works with K-12 and above educators to employ AI in the classroom, allowing students to learn how to use the tools ethically. She believes students need to be prepared for both the short-term and long-term changes that technology brings.
However, Professor James Taylor, a philosophy professor at the University of New Jersey, disagrees.
Taylor told CBS he was open to using AI at first. However, after seeing many identical essays, he decided to ban it after many of the obvious AI was filled with false or misleading information that was generated.
“If you enter the prompt, there’s a boom! There’s an answer. But that means that the student has outsourced all his ideas to the machine.
In Taylor’s philosophy class, students must complete handwriting assignments without a device. Rather than allowing AI to do all the work, students are encouraged to discuss their opinions, analyze other people’s arguments, and reach conclusions about what is right.
“It’s important to use responsibly, but I think there’s a need for classroom space that’s prohibited and that it’s eliminated,” Taylor said.
“As soon as it’s banned, it’s a forbidden fruit,” Bickerstaff pointed out. She believes that children will use AI in a harmful way if their parents or educators do not allow or encourage their use.
Instead, she teaches students and teachers how to write effective AI prompts. This is a way to verify AI output, saying it enhances learning.
You may not see both Bickerstaff and Taylor looking at the ban, but they believe they both take it aggressively, A balanced approach to AI.
“We’re overcoming inflection points, unlike what we’ve lived in before,” Bickerstaff said. “Generating AI is becoming ubiquitous on many tools, social media and devices. If you have a new iPhone, you already have a Generating AI model in your hand.”
