“When you’re a white, pasty girl, people are kinder to you even if you get a spray tan!” Nikki Glazer said during a stand-up act. “They think your life is going well, like you were on vacation. But it’s not. You’re just standing naked in front of teenagers. …And while she was spraying me, she looked at my butt and said, ‘I’m really a fan!’
Glaser thought everything was going according to plan in January: “So in January 2025, I’m probably going to have a brow lift or some kind of very invasive surgery, and I’m not going to do that.” I was considering getting it. ”
It is a procedure in which a person disappears from the public eye for a while and then has to reappear. But then she received calls from two agents. “And if it’s two people, you know that’s good news. Because if it’s bad news, they just make one person do it, because no one wants to do it.” And they say, “So, is there a way to postpone this operation until the second week of January?”
That’s because Glazer will host the Golden Globe Awards on January 5th on CBS. This is just another big undertaking in a year filled with Golden Globes.
The 2024 special “Someday You’ll Die” received Emmy, Grammy and Golden Globe nominations.
“It’s easy to be a bad mother. It’s very easy. But it’s hard to be a good mother. It’s just as easy to be a bad mother as it is to be a great father.”
But it’s the special’s theme song that Glaser wrote that she’s most proud of. “Honestly, this might be one of the things I’m most proud of in my life.”
“It’s almost like writing a joke, in terms of vulnerability, right?” I asked.
“Yes, yes, because all jokes make me feel vulnerable. In that case, I cut it off with some kind of line like, ‘I’m just kidding.’ I was talking about my depression, but we’re not trying to get emotional here. For me, being emotional is very embarrassing, so I think I need to reconsider and say, “I can’t do that.” “Nicky, that’s too hard,” and I’d say, “Yes, you can do it.” ”
Glaser made a name for himself by trolling celebrities with a searing style of jokes that rarely aired on network television, often at the expense of himself or others. All of that came in handy when she trolled the NFL earlier this year. The great Tom Brady is now live on Netflix.
“Tom also lost $30 million in cryptocurrency. How could you fall for that, Tom? ‘Cause even Gronk said, ‘I know it’s not real money.’ That’s what it felt like.”
Glazer says that while most of the roasting work is done, he actually asked Netflix to do the work. “I was like, ‘Tell Tom Brady I’m the Tom Brady of roasting.'” It’s flattering, but it’s also what I meant: Tom Brady is going to be great. I truly feel that he is a man who has worked hard to achieve this goal. ”
The same can be said for Glazer…and the Golden Globes will be her biggest audience ever. “I’m sure you’ll succeed,” she said. “Maybe I can’t nail it in some people’s eyes, but it nails it in my eyes because I’ve built a system to get there. It was impossible to make any further effort.”
We’ll talk more about this system later…because confidence doesn’t always come easily to Glazer.
She has spoken about her struggles with self-medication, eating disorders, and alcoholism. “I drank every night of my life, and it seemed like the only pleasure I had in my life,” she said. “For me, drinking was the worst of them all. And with all of that, it was like whack-a-mole. But they never caused me as much pain as drinking. So drinking was the worst of them all. I’m glad you’re happy.’ It’s just not an option. ”
I said, “During convalescence, they talk about something called ‘sickness.’ Just this kind of general state of restlessness.”
“Yes,” Glazer said. “The obsession with work is like you just don’t want to feel it.”
Will the pressure of hosting the Globes extend to Glazer? She says she hopes so. “I thrive on anxiety,” she said. “I like that feeling of, ‘Oh, what’s going to happen?'” When I’m anxious, I like to kill it. ”
Glazer’s “system” was first developed by her for The Brady Roast with a team of writers that included Sean O’Connor, Jessica Dweck, and Glazer’s longtime boyfriend and collaborator Chris Convey. We are cooperating.
The jokes they come up with are tested multiple times, both on the streets and in small LA clubs, to see what real audiences think.
“I had a bunch of Ozempic jokes I wanted to tell, but I forgot. Of course, I swear! I just gave up soda.”

Golden Globe audiences will decide on January 5 whether all of Glazer’s preparations were successful. But in some ways, she says, she’s already working on her next project: an off-stage project.
“I think my new challenge is to be known as a nice celebrity,” Glazer said. “I just want to be that person that people go, ‘Oh, she’s really great to work with. She was really nice to us,’ and not in an inauthentic way. .”
“Do you want to spread kindness to people while eviscerating everyone around you?” I asked.
“That’s a contradiction,” she said. “I want to spread honesty.”
Don’t miss the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, which will be broadcast live on CBS and Paramount+ on January 5th at 8pm ET/5pm PT.
