Jones had signed a one-year $7 million contract to join the Vikings he knew as his NFC North Rival throughout his time with the Green Bay Packers.
He cut ties with the Packers after turning down pay cuts this past offseason.
Now head coach Kevin O’Connell had the first view that Jones would sign as a veteran who could lead the running back committee scheme in the backfield. The 30-year-old Jones had a history of injuries, including six games he missed in 2023, so it was considered that he had an option there.

However, Jones quickly showed O’Connell, showing he still deserves a share of the Lion’s touch after rushing for 1,138 yards with 55 touchdowns, with 408 yards for 55 yards and 51 passes for 255 carries.
Jones, 1,546 yards from Scrimmage, is his highest total since the 2019 breakout campaign, leading the NFL with 1,558 yards and 19 touchdowns.

Jones also played a key role in the high-octane Vikings offense, which lit up the scoreboard thanks to that time Journeyman quarterback of his career, Sam Darnold, also playing a major role in the passing game.
As NFL fans know, good play action is just as good as a productive run game.
Seeing Jones’ success in the backfield, the Vikings did not waste time keeping him in the 2025 season trying to answer the quarterback questions instead.
Recent reports show that Vikings and Darnold are not expected to reach a deal despite his career-changing campaign in Minnesota. The team still has 2024 first round pick JJ McCarthy on the depth chart. Released by the New York Giants two years after signing the four-year extension, Daniel Jones joined the team and was able to return to offering veteran competitions.
