Archaeologists from Hanover, Maryland came across a rare artifact linked to American abolitionist Harriet Tubman.
The evacuation was led by the Maryland Department of Transport (MDOT) on the premises of Tubman’s father, Ben Ross.
“The plates, pitchers, bowls and more found on Harriet Tubman’s father’s property provide more insight into how the family lived 200 years ago.”

According to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), the home is located deep in the wetlands of Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge, which was established in 1933 as a shelter for migratory birds.
Archaeologists first discovered the home in 2021 using historical documents to identify where it stood.

After a series of more excavations, the brick outlines became apparent along with the glass and claws of the window.
According to FWS, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge is open on more than 20,000 acres of public recreation, with over 5 miles of hiking trails and 17 miles of paddling trails.

Tubman led other slaves freely and led more than 70 people through the abolitionist underground railway network.
“During the public and private meetings of 1858 and 1859, Tubman repeatedly told people that he rescued 50 to 60 people on eight or nine trips. This was before her last mission, which took seven people away in December 1860,” according to the National Park Service.
