“There’s something really special about his focus and the way he articulates and expresses his voice,” Reeves said. “I think it’s really refreshing.”
Reeves said the character of Shadow has a deep backstory and intense emotions, and required a unique approach to bring it to life.
“I kept searching… finding my inner shadow and trying to bring it to the forefront,” he added.
Director Jeff Fowler praised Reeves’ dedication to capturing the essence of Shadow.
“One of the things Keanu did, which was really clever, was identify the voice acting of the other characters,” Fowler said. “When you have four voice actors in the same movie, they all want a unique sound. Keanu recognized that need and found his own shadow.”
The Sonic movie series has grossed more than $725 million worldwide, and fans can expect more Easter eggs and homages to classic video games.
Fowler confirmed one nostalgic reference: blowing air into game cartridges to make them work.
“I don’t know what science is behind it,” Fowler joked.
Meanwhile, fans of Reeves’ other iconic role: john wickyou may be wondering about the possibility of Chapter 5.
“I can’t say never, but right now my knees are saying, ‘I can’t do another John Wick,'” Reeves quipped.
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be released in theaters next Friday, December 20th.
