Jon Jones is likely to follow Stipe Miocic into retirement. UFC 309 Jones and Miocic will headline UFC’s comeback event at Madison Square Garden in New York on November 16 in a potential double retirement bout with the UFC heavyweight title on the line.
Jones told Clocked N’ Loaded that this upcoming fight will likely be his last.
“This will be my last fight,” Jones said after Saturday’s UFC 306 bout in Las Vegas. “Probably my last fight.”
Possible retirements for both fighters have been rumored since the Jones-Miocic fight was announced for UFC 295 last November. The bout was postponed for a year due to an injury to Jones. Since then, UFC CEO Dana White has repeatedly said: Miocic is retiring But Jones was less certain about the timeline.
A retirement for Jones or Miocic would prevent a title unification bout with interim heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall. Jones’ retirement in November would also end his hopes of a super fight with UFC light heavyweight champion Alex Pereira. “Poiton” told Full Send MMA on Saturday that he has messaged Jones about training together, possibly before UFC 309.
“I think there’s a good amount of time (between fights) and his only fight is in November,” said Pereira, who will defend his UFC light heavyweight title against Khalil Rountree Jr. UFC 307 It is scheduled to take place on October 5. “After a match, things always happen, some little injuries, so we can take a little break and train together.”
“A lot of people are talking about this super fight, but I think I have to make the most of this guy’s experience,” Pereira said. “He has a lot of experience, but people are saying he’ll only have one or two more fights and I’m not even at heavyweight yet. I don’t know if that’s possible, but I would like to at least train with him.”
