Italian archaeologists recently excavated ancient Roman tombs while excavating the necropolis.
The discovery was announced on March 21 by the director of Archaeology, Art and Landscape (ABAP) of the Naples metropolitan area.
In a statement translated from Italian to English, authorities said excavations were made in Liternum, an ancient town near the city of Giugliano in Campania.

The excavation site was used as a necropolis from the 1st century to the 3rd century BC
Italian officials highlighted two funeral enclosures that still contain fragments of white cladding plaster “in the recent decoration stage of red, separated in a closed space, and very deep masonry well.”

“One of the enclosures preserves a square spirit us in the center. It is shaved on the surface and niches are painted along the sides to accommodate the urs of the Sinarary,” the statement said.
Historians were able to excavate “graves” at a site consisting of coins, lamps and small vases. This finding later helped identify “different architectural stages” of the structure.
Italian officials said the findings provided “valuable information on daily life, ritual practices and the social dynamics of the communities that lived at the site.”

“Among the most relevant findings, some marble funeral inscriptions stand out, some of which are intact and include Gladiator’s inscriptions (this is a valuable document for understanding the role and memory of these fighters in Roman society,” the press release added.
In a statement, ABAP Principal Mariano Nuzzo said the recent archaeological discoveries near Giugliano were “particularly fruitful.”

“We also appreciate the excellent conservation status of the wall structure and burial (this necropolis) adds an important part to our knowledge of colonial settlements in Liternum, and constitutes a unique opportunity to deepen the study of ancient civilizations and the historical and cultural context of epoch,” Nuzzo said.
ABAP officials said the recent discoveries would help historians “help a better understanding of the ancient landscape and the surrounding urban sexuality of the colonies.
“(This) will lead us to propose new hypotheses about the ancient route through Domitiana, where such burials were to be placed,” the release said.

The latest discoveries are one of several ancient Roman excavations in recent months, both in Italy and elsewhere.
Recently, a 1,600-year-old Jewish bus was discovered in the Italian province of Lazio, becoming the oldest species in Europe.
