Last year, the dying of a boy’s fish occurred after oxygen depletion in the aquatic ecosystem, attracting midge larvae.
According to Tuscany, Orbetello is a thin land stretching in the middle of the lagoon and adjacent to the ocean, shaped like an almond.

Mayor Andrea Casamenti said in a statement that officials are “working to protect the citizens and economic activities of the region.”

Pier Luigi Piro, chairman of Orbetello Fishermen Cooperative, told the Associated Press he hopes the crisis will be resolved as soon as possible.

“Everything we do is hope for a mild tourist season, otherwise a lot of activities will exceed the damage that puts closures at stake,” Piro said.
