New York Governor Kathy Hochul said on Thursday that she would “work at this time” to remove New York Mayor Eric Adams “at this time” and take away the right to decide whether he will remain mayor. He said there is no.
However, Hochul has announced plans to impose a series of measures on her fellow Democratic administrations.
She said these measures are “designed to stabilize the city and gently restore it… to ensure that all services of our residents continue without any confusion” and “our Make sure the leader operates with the city’s greatest interests in mind. An agreement with the Trump Department of Justice.”
As she did, Hochul suggested that Adams has become seen in President Donald Trump. The Donald Trump Department’s Justice Department is calling for the mayor to be fired in federal criminal cases.
“After careful consideration, I have decided that I will not begin the removal process at this time,” Hochul said at a press conference about Adams, who was charged with corruption last year.
“My strong belief is that the will of the voters and the supreme and sanctity of democratic elections exclude me from other actions,” the governor said.
“To drive the city forward, I’m implementing certain guardrails that I think are the first start to reestablish the trust of New York City residents,” Hochul said.
“These proposed guardrails will help ensure that all decisions from City Hall will be in the clear interest of the people of New York City, not the president’s request.”
Hochul said he is creating a new position as a special inspector in New York City Affairs. The New York City Issues can receive updates and information from the city’s department of investigations on corruption investigations and direct the DOI to begin an investigation across the city government.
The governor also said the city’s charter will be revised to prevent the city’s charter from firing city investigators without approval from a state inspector.
Hochul also gives city councils, commissioners and public advocates a clear authority to use external counsel to sue the federal government if the city’s legal department refuses to commence such a case. He said that it will be done.
And she said that as a result of many executive orders and other actions by the Trump administration, she will propose additional funds to the mayor’s office to help her monitor the city and its finances. .
“I was elected to the people of New York City and their working class community and maintained their values. That’s what our administration did,” Adams said in a statement.
“There is no legal basis to limit the power of New Yorkers by limiting the authority of my office, but as we have done in the past, I will work with her to ensure my faith in the government. I told the governor that I was willing to do that, and I look forward to continuing those conversations,” the mayor said.
The governor on Tuesday held a series of meetings with politicians to discuss Adams’ fate.
A day ago, four deputy New York City mayors announced they had resigned. This said Hochul “supposes serious questions about the long-term future of this mayoral administration.”
Since his indictment, Adams has tried to curry favor with Trump, a widely unpopular Republican in a democratic city.
Last week, the Department of Justice asked a US District Court judge in Manhattan to dismiss the case.
Judge Dale Ho held a hearing on Wednesday at the request but ended it saying he would control later.
Seven federal prosecutors, including interim Manhattan US lawyers, resigned in protest of an order by the top DOJ officials to dismiss the case.
The DOJ argues that layoffs are necessary to avoid damaging Adams’ ability to cooperate with the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policy and his ability to seek reelection this year.
However, if the case is dismissed without prejudice, as requested by the DOJ, the prosecutors will have the right to amend the criminal charges against Adams, if they choose.
Last week, Adams agreed to allow federal immigration and customs enforcement agents to Rikers Island, the city’s largest prison complex.
