At least 11 deaths were linked Friday to cartons of frozen shakes sold to nursing homes and long-term care facilities that have been recalled after the Listeria outbreak.
Supplementary shakes are labelled with brands Lyons Readycare and Sysco Imperial, the FDA said. The shaking has caused at least 38 people to get sick in 21 states, with 37 hospitalisations and 11 deaths, according to the FDA.
The outbreak includes lawsuits dating back to 2018, but it is ongoing and has 20 cases reported in 2024 and 2025, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.
Investigations into the outbreak of the FDA are still underway.
Symptoms of Listeria
Listeria symptoms usually start within two weeks of eating bacterially contaminated food, but according to the FDA website, it can start the same day or 10 weeks later. Mild symptoms include fever, muscle pain, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea.
If more severe forms occur, symptoms can include headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and cramps, the FDA says.
Listeria is most likely to get tired of pregnant women, newborns, adults over the age of 65, and people with a weakened immune system.
Anyone with symptoms is encouraged to call their healthcare provider.
