Americans are factoring their ancestors while booking holidays, and many are delving into their family trees.
Experts say the travel trend known as “roots travel” has gained momentum and has increased the number of tourist visits to European countries.

In Scotland, the country’s official tourism website, Visit Scotland, says at least 40 million travelers from around the world visited “to assert their Scottish ancestors.”
“DNA-based ancestors explosion… Scottish ancestors (that don’t have) have come to the forefront like never before,” says the site.

Petersen said her own family embarked on a trip to Scotland after conducting extensive heritage studies.
“It’s certainly something we will never forget, and we are now grateful that it will be passed down to the next generation through our children,” she said.

Petersen said the highlight of her trip was finding a place where her husband’s great, great, great grandparents got married.
“Many ancestral visitors report feeling a real emotional connection the moment they step into Scottish soil. They even feel a sense of “attribution” or “going home.” “We do,” Scotland said.

Italy declared its “year of Italian roots in the world” in 2024, attracting Italian visitors.

The 2020 census found that English is the most common race or ethnic group.

Those who identified the largest groups as English (46.6 million), German (45 million), and Irish (38.6 million) as only or in combination.
According to the 2020 census, the population of Lebanese, Iran and Egypt accounts for almost half of the 3.5 million people reporting Middle East and North African descent.

“This trend has grown over the past few years, and people have booked this type of vacation in a variety of ways,” he said.

Duckworth said he would help roots travelers hire local drivers and guides and guides who know the area well to find destinations unique to their personal stories.
