Pop icon Elton John said Sunday that he had trouble seeing his new musical “The Devil Wears Prada” because he lost his vision due to an eye infection.
John updated the audience on his condition at the end of the opening night of the musical at the Dominion Theater in London, which was also a charity gala for the Elton John AIDS Foundation.
“As you know, I was unable to attend most of the previews because I have lost my eyesight and have difficulty seeing movies,” he said. “But I love hearing it, and it sounded really good tonight.”
John, 77, revealed in September that he had suffered a “severe eye infection” which left him with “limited vision in one eye”. The doctor said that although the wound is healing, “it will take some time for vision to return to the affected eye.”
Last week, he said on “Good Morning America” that he has “hope and encouragement” that he will recover, but admitted he can’t even see the lyrics in the studio.
“I can’t see anything, I can’t read anything, I can’t see anything,” John said.
John, who retired from touring in 2023, is currently working on a stage musical based on the 2006 film (the film itself is based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel) about a young journalist who caters to the demands of fashion. He wrote the music for “The Devil Wears Prada.” Magazines and their terrible editors.
