delta airlines has had to suspend hot meal service on more than 200 flights departing from its hub, Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, over the past few days due to “food safety issues.” .
Delta Air Lines said operations at the facility have been suspended and hot meals will be served in other kitchens.
“During a recent inspection at DTW’s kitchen, Delta’s catering partners were notified of a food safety issue within the facility,” Delta Air Lines said in a statement Sunday. “Delta Air Lines and its catering partners immediately ceased hot food production and subsequently ceased all activity at the facility. Hot food and other onboard offerings will be managed from other facilities.”
In a message to crew on Friday, the airline said it was unable to carry first-class meals onboard due to “unforeseen supply chain issues” and additional snacks would be provided on board.
The Food and Drug Administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment Sunday.
The company said there were no reported illnesses among its employees or customers and that affected customers were provided with travel vouchers or frequent flyer miles as compensation.
Airlines typically serve thousands of meals a day to passengers through third-party catering kitchens. Do & Company, which is affiliated with Delta Air Lines, did not immediately comment.
In July, a Delta flight from Detroit to Amsterdam was diverted to New York after reports of spoiled chicken, forcing the airline to limit meals to pasta on certain flights for several days.
