Dolphins are one of the smartest animals on the planet and have been respected for thousands of years for their intelligence, emotional and social interactions with humans.
Now, Google uses artificial intelligence (AI) to try and understand how they communicate with each other.
Google is collaborating with researchers from the Florida-based nonprofit Georgia Tech and the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP) to study and record the sound of dolphins for 40 years, creating a new AI model called Ilfingenma.

For decades, WDP has correlated sound types with behavioral context. For example, according to the project’s Google blog, in the Dolphin Battle, a signature whistle is used to be reunited by mothers and calves, but “scokes” are often observed during the Dolphin Battle.
Click “Buzz” to be used frequently during courtship or pursuit.
Now, using the vast amount of data collected by WDP, Google has built Dolphingemma based on Google’s own lightweight, AI open model known as Gemma.
Dolphingemma is trained to analyze a vast library of recordings, detecting the patterns, structures, and even potential “meaning” behind dolphin communication and vocalization.
Over time, Ilfingenma tries to organize the sound of dolphins into categories – like most words, sentences, or human language expressions.

“By identifying repetitive sound patterns, clusters and reliable sequences, this model helps researchers to uncover hidden structures and potential implications within dolphin natural communication.
“In the end, these patterns are enhanced with synthetic sounds created by researchers, pointing to the objects the dolphins want to play, and could establish a shared vocabulary with the dolphins for interactive communication.”
Dolphingemma uses Google’s Pixel phone technology, particularly audio recording technology used in Pixel devices, to create clean, high quality sound recordings of dolphin vocalizations.
Pixel’s phone technology can separate dolphin clicks and whistles from waves, boat engines, or underwater static background noise. This clean audio is important for AI models like Dolphingemma, as nasty and noisy data confuses AI, researchers said.

Google says it plans to release Dolphingemma as an open model this summer, allowing researchers around the world to use it and adapt.
Although trained on Atlantic spotted dolphins, the model also helps to study fine-tuning of other species, such as bottlenorths and spinner dolphins, researchers said.
“By providing tools such as Dolphingemma, we hope that researchers around the world will provide tools to mine their own acoustic datasets, accelerate searches for patterns, and collectively deepen their understanding of these intelligent marine mammals,” the blog post reads.
