Najjar’s debut novel follows Lola Fine in New York City Content creator After being cancelled, she retreats to the Hamptons, but her summer neighbor is a cultural critic who wrote a poignant revelation about her. As Lola embarks on a journey of self-discovery, the two unexpectedly begin their summer dive.
“We were all complicated and layered, so we really wanted to layer the heroines intricate and layered. “Because we are really incomplete, because we are all in progress.”
The Hamptons setting was chosen for its luxuries and dramatic possibilities, Najar said.
“My followers know my obsession with the rich mom’s place. And it’s shrouded in mystery. It’s gorgeous. A lot of drama goes there,” she said.
She incorporated real-life locations to provide readers with a reference point.
The book contains aspects of queer romance. This attracted some criticism, taking into account Najar’s straightforward female identity. Najjar said he worked with a queer collaborator to ensure authentic expression.
“I think it’s important to have a strange voice in the room, so I wanted to work with some weird collaborators,” she said. “So we got that living experience in the book, so I think we nailed it. It was an incredible experience working with her. You can’t wait for people to read it and form their own opinions.”
