In response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs, leaders in Canada’s most populous state threatened to cut energy to the United States with a “smile in my face,” adding that they “need to feel the pain.”
Ontario Prime Minister Doug Ford doubled the threat at Monday’s mining competition.
“If they want to annihilate Ontario, I’ll do everything, including cutting off their energy with a smile on my face,” he vowed Monday, the Toronto Sun reported.

“They depend on our energy. They need to feel the pain. They want to come hard.
The US is a major customer of Canada’s electricity, the report says, and New York, Michigan and Minnesota are the three largest customers of Ontario’s domestic production electricity.
In 2022, Canada’s revenues for electricity exports to the US reached a high of $5.8 billion, according to Canadian energy regulators.
Ford said it coincides with tariffs on US customs.
“That’s exactly what we’re trying to do,” Ford said.

“The state has a big voice, but it’s the federal government that is leading the charges, and whoever there is, it stands shoulder-to-shoulder.”
Canada announced retaliation fees for US goods on Tuesday in response to Trump’s tariffs.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and several Canadian directors are also threatening additional measures.
“There’s no winner in the fight against Canada,” Trudeau said while talking to an Ottawa reporter.

“We won’t be in the 51st state, but he (Trump) can damage the Canadian economy and he started this morning, but I’m going to know quickly so that American families know that he’ll hurt people on both sides of the border,” he added.
