Canada on Thursday announced a ban on 324 assault-style firearms in a continued push toward stricter gun laws.
Canadian leaders also said they are working with the Ukrainian government to consider how guns can be donated to help fight Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Defense Minister Bill Blair said: “Every help we can provide the Ukrainian people is a step towards victory for them.”
The latest regulations announced by Public Safety Minister Dominique LeBlanc include investments in border security to deter smuggling and trafficking, as well as tighter firearm regulations and tougher penalties for gun traffickers. .

The regulations will take effect immediately, officials said.

“This means these firearms can no longer be used,” Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc said.
The tightening of gun control laws in Canada comes after 1,500 makes and models of firearms were banned in May 2020. Last month, that number rose to more than 2,000 as new models were confirmed.
“Firearms designed for the battlefield clearly do not belong in our communities,” said Dominic LeBlanc, Minister of Public Safety, Democratic Institutions and Intergovernmental Affairs. “These types of weapons are too often used to commit some of the worst atrocities Canada has ever witnessed.”
