California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday that his state will file a lawsuit challenging President Trump’s authority to impose drastic tariffs that sparked the world trade war.
The lawsuit would argue that Trump will use it to impose international emergency economic forces Customs In Mexico, Canada, China, or 10% tariffs on all imports are illegal. The law allows the president to freeze and block transactions in response to foreign threats.
The lawsuit filed in US District Court for the Northern District of California argues that enacting such tariffs requires approval from Congress, the Newsom’s Office said in a news release.
“This will not have any more impact on other states,” Newsom said at a press conference Wednesday alongside California Attorney General Rob Bonta, Central Valley.
“Already, the vendor has warned us that they will pass the costs of Trump’s tariffs to California,” Bonta said.
Bonta and Newsom noted that the lawsuit will be in its 14th week within the 14 weeks California filed against the Trump administration.
“We are asking the court to hold the president down,” Bonta said.

The announcement comes days after Newsom asked the state to exempt California exports from retaliatory tariffs. It has not been announced yet.
