Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva underwent surgery for an intracranial hemorrhage and is recovering in the intensive care unit, Sirio Libanes Hospital said in a statement early Tuesday.
The surgery was carried out after the 79-year-old left-wing leader developed a headache that doctors believed was caused by a fall at home in October.

The hospital said Lula had come for treatment in Sao Paulo, 620 miles south of the capital Brasilia, and was “under observation in a bed in the intensive care unit” after the bleeding stopped.

Brazil’s president has not yet commented.

Lula’s office announced at the time that he had canceled his trip to Russia for the BRICS summit following the accident. That left a cut on the back of his head, just above his neck.
Cirio-Libanes said a press conference will be held to discuss the surgery at 9 a.m. local time.
