Arizona State University student Casey Sloan, who is accused of stabbing a classmate twice in an apparently random attack in a Glendale classroom last month, had two of the four charges filed last week. After the charges were dismissed, he entered a not guilty plea Wednesday in Maricopa County.
Maricopa County authorities initially charged Sloan, 19, with four crimes, including attempted first-degree murder, in connection with the attack on student Mara Daffron. After a preliminary hearing on Sept. 30, Sloan was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and disorderly conduct, according to court records.
Judge Ashley Rahman also granted Sloan $250,000 cash bail and listed conditions for his release if he can pay the full amount.
Sloan allegedly approached Daffron, a classmate, on September 19 and stabbed him “multiple times,” according to an affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital citing multiple witnesses.

According to FOX 10 Phoenix, student Matthew McCormick witnessed the attack in his classroom and took quick action to stop the alleged stabbing, potentially saving Daffron’s life.
“At that moment, I wasn’t really thinking about anything, I just knew I had to do something,” McCormick told the magazine.
“When she was about to attack a third time, I was able to grab her wrist and catch her before any further damage was done.”
About 13 witnesses who were present at the time of the attack, including the professor, told police details about the incident, and police said in a probable cause affidavit obtained by Fox News Digital that the stabbing happened “without provocation or words uttered.” I wrote that.

Police corroborated McCormick’s testimony in a report, saying one witness was “able to disarm the defendant by removing the knife from the defendant’s right hand and throwing it away from the defendant.” Another witness then “kicked the knife into the back of the classroom.”

“Another witness testified that the defendant was sitting at a desk in the classroom, but when the victim entered the classroom, he suddenly stood up, ran toward the victim, and stabbed the victim multiple times.” the affidavit states.
Detectives found a handwritten note in Sloan’s backpack that apparently mentioned an act she was “about to commit,” but they said they “could not say specifically what she was referring to.” “I wasn’t there.”
“The defendant admitted that after reading her ‘Miranda Rights,’ he came to class with the intention of hurting someone and that he had been planning the attack the night before.”
In questioning by detectives after the incident, Sloan also expressed a desire to “hurt someone” in class that day, and that his targeting of Ms. Daffron was due to the other person she was planning to attack. It is said that this was because she was an “easier target” than the person (whom she called the “villain”). veteran. “
