A second infant has died in an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes linked to recalled Yusho Foods cooked meat and poultry products in eight states, federal health officials said. The products were sold online and in retail stores across the United States, federal health officials said.
In its latest update, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced 19 confirmed cases and 17 people hospitalized. States with confirmed cases include California, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Tennessee.
The CDC said seven of the illnesses are associated with pregnancy.
In California, a mother and twins became ill and both infants died, but Listeria monocytogenes was only detected in samples from the mother and one twin, so the confirmed cases in this outbreak include the mother and one twin. Only one person is included.
In Tennessee, a mother and her infant became ill, and an infant died.
Samples from sick people were collected from October 24, 2021 to October 28, 2024, the agency said.
The CDC said the spread may be higher than reported because people who got sick may not have been tested for Listeria. It will take three to four weeks to determine if anyone was involved in the outbreak.
Listeria monocytogenes can be especially harmful to people who are pregnant, people over 65, and people with weakened immune systems.
People affected by the outbreak reported purchasing food from multiple stores where Yu Shang food is sold and online.
Officials urged anyone with recalled products to either throw them away or return them. The recalled products include those manufactured before October 28, 2024, with “Yu Shang” or “Yushang” (certification number “P46684” or “EST. M46684”) on the label. It will be.
